A team of marine biologists aboard the research vessel\n\t\t\t\t\tPoseidon's Lantern has announced the discovery of a previously unknown organism living in\n\t\t\t\t\tone of the most inhospitable environments on Earth — the superheated waters surrounding hydrothermal\n\t\t\t\t\tvents nearly three miles beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean.

\n\n\t\t\t\t

The creature, a jellyfish-like organism roughly the size of a human hand, was first observed during a\n\t\t\t\t\troutine dive using the remotely operated submersible Nereid IV on May 23rd, approximately\n\t\t\t\t\t460 nautical miles southwest of Hawaii.

\"We almost missed it entirely,\" said Dr. Kenji Watanabe, the expedition's chief biologist, during a\n\t\t\t\t\tpress conference at the University of Hawaii's oceanography department on Tuesday. \"The cameras\n\t\t\t\t\tpicked up a faint luminescence near the vent chimney, and when we adjusted the angle, there it was —\n\t\t\t\t\tpulsing, translucent, and very much alive in water that would dissolve most organic tissue.\"

The organism has been provisionally named Ignis medusae — Latin for \"fire jellyfish\" —\n\t\t\t\t\tthough researchers caution that it may not belong to any known phylum. What makes the discovery particularly remarkable, scientists say, is the creature's apparent ability\n\t\t\t\t\tto metabolize sulfur compounds and mineral deposits expelled by the vents — a process that, if\n\t\t\t\t\tconfirmed, would represent an entirely novel form of chemosynthesis.

\n\n\t\t\t\t

\"We've known about chemosynthetic bacteria for decades,\" explained Dr. Sofia Engström, a biochemist\n\t\t\t\t\tat the Stockholm Institute of Marine Research who was not involved in the expedition but reviewed\n\t\t\t\t\tits initial findings. \"But a multicellular organism of this complexity operating on a similar\n\t\t\t\t\tmetabolic pathway? That would be extraordinary. That would be, frankly, paradigm-altering.\"

The discovery has already drawn the attention of NASA and the European Space Agency, both of which\n\t\t\t\t\thave long hypothesized that life could exist in the subsurface oceans of Jupiter's moon Europa or\n\t\t\t\t\tSaturn's moon Enceladus — environments thought to contain hydrothermal activity similar to Earth's\n\t\t\t\t\tdeep-sea vents.

Dr. Ramon Gutierrez, a senior astrobiologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, called the findings\n\t\t\t\t\t\"immensely significant\" in a statement released Tuesday evening.

\n\n\t\t\t\t

\"Every time we expand the known boundaries of where life can survive on our own planet, it\n\t\t\t\t\tstrengthens the case for searching more aggressively beyond it,\" Dr. Gutierrez wrote.\n\t\t\t\t\t\"Ignis medusae, if the early data holds, is exactly the kind of analog we've been looking\n\t\t\t\t\tfor.\"

The research team plans to return to the site in September with more advanced collection equipment,\n\t\t\t\t\tincluding a specially designed pressure chamber that would allow specimens to be brought to the\n\t\t\t\t\tsurface alive for the first time. Previous attempts to retrieve deep-vent organisms have been\n\t\t\t\t\thampered by the extreme pressure differentials involved — the vents sit at depths where pressure\n\t\t\t\t\texceeds 400 atmospheres.

Dr. Watanabe acknowledged the skepticism but expressed confidence that subsequent expeditions would\n\t\t\t\t\tvindicate the team's conclusions. \"Science demands rigor, and we welcome the scrutiny,\" he said.\n\t\t\t\t\t\"But I've been studying these vents for twenty-two years, and I have never seen anything like what\n\t\t\t\t\twe saw that night.
